Rural Emergency Medicine

Well it's halfway through November, otherwise known as the Month of the Mo. The Mo is donned in the spirit of raising awareness and funds for men's health issues.

For a variety of reasons men tend to access healthcare less than women, ignore health problems for longer, smoke more and consume greater quantities of alcohol. This is reflected in that the average life expectancy for males is 78, compared to 83 for females, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

This month, Movember Australia is raising funds specifically for two great causes; BeyondBlue and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

Depression in men is often seen as taboo especially amongst men. BeyondBlue provides a service which aims to help men (and others) who are feeling a bit down to get back on their feet. For a range of other mental health services click here.

According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA), 'tragically more than 3,300 men will die as a direct cause of prostate cancer' this year. The PCFA is dedicated into furthering research, providing support and raising awareness concerning prostrate cancer.

This month I am doing my bit for the Movember cause. Unfortunately I've come to realise I was not blessed with moustache growing prowess, and will be not sporting any of the fine Mo's below.

However, drawing from my Shave 4 a Cure experience I've come up with a new way to fashion a mo. This Mo needs your support. If I can reach $1500, I'll say goodbye to my curly locks and don this fashionable Mo. All you have to do is go to my Mo Space and click DONATE.

Happy Movember.
